Background on preservation activities in MPP |
|
Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP) has unique collection of monographs and periodicals which describes different aspects of Nepalese society, culture, history and Nepali literature of different periods. The library collection is rich in rare materials, which are very vulnerable for circulation. The library is providing these materials for scholars and researchers at the same time it identifies the need of preservation of these rare materials. For the preservation purpose, MPP has been continuously microfilming and digitizing rare and endangered materials with its own resource and sometimes with supports from other agencies. So far, the library has produced 600 reels of microfilms covering around 380 titles of periodicals and 142 titles of monographs

Summary of the Microfilmed Periodicals under EAP066 |
|
MPP microfilmed 56 titles of the periodicals in the year 2006-2007. The microfilmed titles selected are all historically important. Most of the titles selected are very rare and exist in MPP only. Standardization of the Microfilming Process in MPP |
|
During one year of EAP066, the quality of microfilming in MPP has greatly improved and the standards of microfilms have been greatly enhanced. Some of the advancement in microfilming can be summarized as follows:
- MPP has standardized the initial targets to be supplied during the filming. These improvised targets include initial targets, bibliographic and eye-legible targets.
- The proper spacing between the titles has been maintained in microfilm which is the international practice followed in most of the archiving institutions.
- MPP now has well equipped department for quality control (Q.C.) for microfilms. Each microfilm passes through strict steps of quality control before approval.
Now MPP is able to duplicate copies of microfilm negatives and producing positives as well from this year with the recent addition of a duplicator.
The standardization of microfilming process in MPP was attained with the expert guidance of RMRL along with the effort of the Microfilming Unit at MPP. During the project Mr. G. Sundar, the director of RMRL, visited MPP twice to ensure smooth running of the whole process and to check on the quality control. MPP expresses its gratitude to Mr. G. Sundar and the RMRL team. |
